The Limestone County Parks and Recreation department is dedicated to developing new areas of recreation and maintaining the parks of Limestone County. The Limestone County Parks Board was established in 1992. Its board members are hard working volunteers who want Limestone County to be a great place to work and play.
The board is currently working on goals and projects that will enhance the beauty of our county and broaden recreational opportunities. We have completed our rails to trails project, which is a trail dedicated for horseback riding, biking, and walking. The 10 mile trail is located near Elkmont in the northern part of the county. The trail head starts at Piney Chapel Road just off of AL Highway 127 and travels 10 miles north to the Tennessee state line. Trailheads at both ends provide restrooms, public pavillions and plenty of parking. We also have a public campground on the Tennessee river, a canoe trail and a two wheel bike trail that cover over 100 miles around the county.
